Used cars hold secret risks for most drivers

Almost every person drives a used vehicle at some point in their life. It might be a car that your dad passed along to you when you turned 16. Or it is a vehicle you bought when you first left for college and made your first adult purchase.

Whatever the circumstance, used cars are an excellent way to obtain transportation for a significantly lower price tag. However, buying a used vehicle puts drivers at risks for concealed maintenance and possible mechanical issues.

What lurks beneath the hood

Most used vehicles are still reliable for the average person, but a critical factor in used vehicles are flawed designs. According to Consumer Reports, millions of cars still contain safety defects from previous recalls.

A significant example is a flawed design in Honda's airbags. The airbags released a piece of metal instead of the typical cushioning in the steering wheel. Honda initially sent a recall for the defect in the early 2000s, but recently, a man passed away due to the error in a used Honda Civic.

It's only one of the many incidents where drivers dealt with car defects significantly after the initial recall because the used vehicle was never fixed. There are also other issues where a previous owner or dealer does not disclose previous damage or maintenance that will affect your experience with the vehicle.

It's also very likely a used car seems great on the surface but contains minor issues that will turn into a significant accident. For example, if the brake pads are worn down when you purchase the vehicle, it's more likely you will have to repair them or you end up with broken brakes while driving.

If a car cannot operate correctly, it puts you and other drivers at risk every time the car hits the road. If you were in a car crash due to a faulty vehicle or a distracted driver, you have the right to seek compensation in Florida for your injuries and lost wages.
