Drowsy driving leading to alarming number of crashes, deaths

Speeding, drunk driving, distracted driving and the like are not the only causes of fatal accidents. Drowsiness of those behind the wheels is also an important factor responsible for the accidents. Specifically, while law enforcement officials continuously target drunk drivers and speeding vehicles, drowsy driving can result many commercial vehicle accidents which can also prove fatal.

The scary reality is that a lot of people face danger from the drivers who feel drowsy owing to lack of proper rest and sleep. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, there were 795 people who died from drowsy-driving-related crashes in 2017. Some of the issues that drowsy drivers experience include delayed reaction time, impaired judgment and poor concentration.

Drowsy drivers include night shift workers, commercial drivers, anyone who has not had enough sleep and people with untreated sleep disorders. Drowsiness tends to slow down the reaction time, makes the driver inattentive and affects his decision-making capability, all of which can lead to a fatal road accident.

Drowsy drivers contribute to a disproportionate percentage of head-on collisions and rear end accidents, both of which lead to serious injuries. Florida Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles estimated that in 2017, 4,329 crashes involved drowsy drivers in this state alone. These crashes led to an estimated 305 people seriously injured and 28 deaths. However, there is broad consensus across the communities that the numbers are an underestimate of the impact of drowsy driving.

Sleepy drivers on the highways are a matter of grave concern. In modern times, people work on irregular schedules and odd hours, both of which cause lack of sleep. Those who get behind the wheels without adequate sleep cause great risk for themselves as well as the others on the road.
