3 behaviors that lead to serious crashes in construction zones

If you regularly drive on highways and interstates throughout Florida, you are likely aware of the numerous road construction projects currently underway throughout the state. Even though they are intended to build or improve roadways, these projects can be frustrating for motorists because they often mean closed lanes or lane shifts, traffic congestion and slower speeds.

As frustrating as this may be, it is crucial for every motorist to drive safely in these areas to avoid causing an accident. Unfortunately, not every driver actually does this and serious crashes do occur. In fact, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says that in 2012, Florida ranked in the top three states for fatalities suffered in a work or road construction zone. These accidents can be caused by three common -- yet avoidable -- driving behaviors.

  1. Distracted driving: Motorists who are distracted by their passengers, phones, eating, drinking or grooming habits are not focused on the road. Because of this, they can miss critical signs and other cues telling them to slow down or move over in a construction zone.
  2. Drunk driving: Driving under the influence of alcohol significantly impacts a driver's abilities to react fast, anticipate changing road conditions and interpret traffic signage. These are crucial skills that can come into play in constructions zones.
  3. Reckless driving: People are typically expected to slow down and be especially mindful around construction crews. These workers, as well as other motorists, can be put in immediate danger if a reckless driver is speeding, following other vehicles too closely, weaving through traffic or driving in prohibited areas.

Each of these behaviors can be dangerous on any road at any time, but they can be particularly hazardous in construction zones.

If you or a loved one has recently been injured or killed in a serious car accident caused by a negligent or dangerous driver in a construction zone, you may be eligible to collect compensation. With the help of your attorney, you can identify the at-fault party and pursue damages to help you cope with the often tragic consequences of these crashes.
