Tampa Uber Accident Lawyer

Many people use rideshare vehicles to get from place to place. They may use them on a daily basis or maybe they use them only in certain situations, such as when they are too drunk to drive.

In any case, Uber use is growing in popularity. While these vehicles are generally safe and convenient, accidents can still occur. And when they do happen, there may be confusion about liability. Will you have to use your auto insurance? Is the driver liable? Or does the rideshare company foot the bill?

Have you been involved in a rideshare accident? If so, see how Tampa Uber accident lawyers at Anderson & Anderson can help you with your case.

Rideshare Insurance Limits/Liability

Uber and Lyft have similar insurance policies. They provide coverage only at certain times, or periods. While these companies may cover most accidents, there are times in which the driver’s personal insurance policy will apply. Here’s what you need to know:

  • Period 0: This is when the driver is not logged into the Uber/Lyft app. Uber and Lyft provide no coverage during this time, so if the driver gets into an accident, they will have to use their personal auto insurance.
  • Period 1: This is when the driver is logged into the app but has not accepted a ride request. Both rideshare companies provide liability coverage of up to $50,000 per person and $100,000 per accident if the rideshare driver is at fault.
  • Period 2: This is when the driver has accepted a trip and is on their way to pick up the passenger. In this case, the liability coverage is $1 million.
  • Period 3: This is when the customer is in the rideshare vehicle. At this stage, both Uber and Lyft provide liability coverage of up to $1 million. There is also limited coverage for damage to the driver’s vehicle as well as uninsured motorist coverage.

Rideshare Dangers

Be mindful when accepting rides from Uber drivers. While these rideshare companies offer convenience and tend to cost less than driving your own vehicle, there are concerns about how well they screen their drivers.

Not only do some drivers have a poor driving history with DUIs and accidents, but there have been cases where people pose as rideshare drivers. They then assault or murder passengers.

Statistics even show that fatal accidents are even increasing due to the popularity of rideshare companies, so exercise caution.
