Driver Causes Four-Vehicle Crash on I-75 After Swerving in Tampa

CarCrash10

In May of 2025, a four-vehicle crash occurred on I-75. This Tampa car accident reportedly occurred after a driver swerved for unknown reasons. This apparent driving error led to the death of one motorist. The crash highlights how dangerous even slight mistakes can be when vehicles travel at high speeds down major highways. But can you file an injury claim against a driver who swerved and caused your crash? Does this represent “negligence” under Florida law?

Hyundai “Propelled” into I-75 Guardrail

Authorities say that the recent four-vehicle crash on I-75 occurred shortly after a 56-year-old Hyundai driver swerved in front of a Mazda driver. The two cars collided, and this impact “propelled” the Hyundai into the guardrail. The vehicle then overturned, moving into the opposite lanes and impacting two other vehicles. The driver of the Hyundai died in the collision. Amazingly, none of the other drivers involved in the crash suffered serious injuries.

Why Might a Driver Swerve on the Highway?

In order to determine whether swerving represents negligence, you need to figure out why the driver made this type of maneuver. Distraction is one possible explanation. If a driver is looking at their phone, they might veer out of their lane before glancing up. At this point, they may panic and “overcorrect,” resulting in loss of control and a potential accident. If authorities determine that the driver was using their phone seconds before the crash, they may conclude that this represents a traffic violation.

Drivers might also swerve due to intoxication. Various substances can cause drivers to swerve uncontrollably, perhaps most notably alcohol. A driver may swerve due to fatigue, having almost fallen asleep before jolting themself awake.

With all that said, it’s important to note that swerving may be a last-minute attempt to avoid a collision. For example, a responsible driver might be forced to swerve while avoiding a drunk driver. This highlights the need to wait for the authorities to finish their investigations before drawing conclusions.

 Other Factors to Consider

Authorities might also consider whether drivers were speeding before crashes. For example, a driver might swerve after a motorist speeds past them while breaking the speed limit. Reckless drivers, including street racers, might also cause other motorists to panic and swerve.
