Can I Get Compensation After a Golf Cart Accident in Tampa?

GolfCartPond

Many communities across the Tampa Bay area have welcomed golf carts onto their roads, and these low-speed vehicles are now a common sight throughout the Sunshine State. But while golf carts might be convenient, they also pose serious safety concerns. A golf cart lacks many of the safety features found in traditional passenger vehicles, and they are not designed for use on busy roads. A collision with a normal vehicle can be catastrophic, causing serious injuries or death. What can you do after a golf cart crash in Tampa? Can you sue?

Fatal Golf Cart Accident Reported in Tampa Bay Area

In April of 2025, numerous sources reported a fatal golf cart crash in the Tampa Bay Area. Authorities say that the crash occurred in Sun City Center, a senior living community where many residents ride golf carts. A 71-year-old resident was driving her golf cart when a van driver ran a red light, impacting the cart at a speed of about 45 miles per hour. The cart was completely destroyed – and the senior woman died from her injuries.

Authorities confirmed that the woman had a green light and the right of way when the fatal crash occurred. They also noted that she was crossing at Pebble Beach Boulevard – a designated crossing area for golf cart drivers. These golf cart crossings are designed to improve traffic safety in communities like Sun City Center, especially for those who need to cross busy roads. Unfortunately, these designated crossing areas are only effective if other motorists obey the rules of the road.

It is not yet clear whether the van driver will face any criminal charges or traffic tickets for causing this crash. However, the reports make it quite clear that he ran a red light – and that the elderly woman had the right of way. One would assume that the van driver will face significant consequences. In addition to criminal charges, the van driver might also face a civil wrongful death lawsuit – filed by the family of the deceased victim.

Golf Cart Accidents Are Becoming More Common in Florida

Incidents like these are becoming more common across Florida – especially in senior living areas or so-called “golfing communities.” Florida’s senior population is high compared to that of other states, and elderly people seem to love golf carts for all kinds of reasons. That being said, golf carts are also becoming popular among people of all ages – and golf cart safety should be a major priority in the Sunshine State going forward.
