Four killed in Florida car crash

A head-on collision in Central Florida resulted in four fatalities, two of the victims being a teen girl and her grandmother. The accident happened on Christmas, and the girl was spending time with her grandmother, who had recently been widowed. The accident was serious enough to attract the attention of Tampa media outlets.

The accident appeared to be related to a bad decision to try to pass vehicles on a curve. Police were called to the accident shortly after noon, and they determined that the driver of a Buick was trying to pass other vehicles as he approached a curve. As this was a two-way road, the man was traveling in the lane reserved for oncoming traffic.

The grandmother, who was traveling with her granddaughter, was driving from the opposite direction on the curve. Apparently, there was just no opportunity to prevent the imminent head-on collision. The Buick wound up overturned in a nearby ditch, and it caught fire. Both occupants of the Buick also died in the accident.

Police did not say whether alcohol or drugs factored in to this accident. They have put out a call to the public seeking additional information about the accident, and specifically, about the occupants of the Buick.

At first impression, it seems that a driver's poor decision to try to pass multiple vehicles at the same time when it was not safe to do so has caused a terrible tragedy. For many, the tragedy will likely leave a shadow on Christmas time for years to come.

While no amount of money can bring the victims back, the families of those who were not at fault may have valid legal claims for compensation against the estates of those who were responsible via a wrongful death lawsuit.
