Florida being hard hit by deadly hit and run epidemic

If one believes recent analysis of traffic safety statistics, the country is facing an epidemic of fatal hit and run accidents, and Florida happens to be one of the states hardest hit by it.

Specifically, the number of fatalities due to hit and run accidents has risen significantly over the past decade. From 2012 to 2016, the last year statistics were available, the number of fatalities increased from 1,512 to 2,046, which marks a 35 percent increase. The problem has arguably been ongoing since 2009, as the number of fatalities is 60 percent higher now than it was in 2009.

In any event, the number of fatalities due to hit and run car accidents is higher now than ever, or, at least since 1975, when the government started tracking these figures.

For its part, Florida has had more than its share of fatal hit and run accidents. Among states, it ranks high with respect to its fatality rate, having close to 2 hit and run fatalities per every 100,000 residents. Not surprisingly, most of these victims, two-thirds, are either pedestrians or bicyclists.

Sadly, drivers who take off from fatal accidents are rarely caught. Although police do tend to have more success apprehending drivers after deadly accidents as opposed to other hit and runs, they still manage to catch up with the driver only 1 time out 3.

Especially when the driver is not found, hit-and-run accidents present special legal issues for the families of Tampa-area victims. The family may, for instance, have to look to the victim's own insurance company in order to receive compensation, depending of course on what sort of coverages the victim purchased. Navigating through such issues is often best done with the help of an experienced attorney.
