Distributer recalling scooters over safety concerns

As a previous post discussed, Tampa residents will soon be able to rent an electric scooter to go from place to place downtown or in other areas where people congregate. This latest transportation fad has already taken hold in several other cities across the country.

However, there are concerns about how safe these vehicles are to operate. On the heels of those concerns, which we reported in our previous post, one of the distributers of these scooters, Limes, has had to recall two different models of their scooters for two different reasons.

In one case, the distributer had to recall vehicles because there were reports that the lithium batteries, if their casing was damaged, could spark and start a fire without warning.

Now, Lime is recalling another line of its vehicles, manufactured by a different company, because of concerns that the decking on the scooter could break apart in the event of a sudden jolt or impact, such as by riding off of a curb at a high speed.

These recall come as Lime is facing scrutiny for allegedly overlooking or downplaying safety concerns with these scooters. For instance, a couple of months ago, Lime received a warning from one of its juicers, that is, a person who is contracted to collect and charge the scooters, that he observed cracking underneath the decks of some of the scooters.

At least at this point, there is no indication that these new developments are going to get Tampa authorities to change their mind about allowing these vehicles on the streets, so Floridians are likely going to have to just get used to their presence. Still, if someone does get hurt because of a design or manufacturing a defect on one of these vehicles, it may be possible for her to file a product liability case.
