Florida pedestrians do not fare well on the roads

Residents of Tampa who have tried to walk downtown or in other busy areas probably realize that navigating through traffic is risky. Others may have noticed lots of articles in the local papers about pedestrians in this state who got seriously hurt or even died after a car hit them.

An analysis of relatively recent data confirmed what many might have already realized anecdotally. Namely, Florida is not a great state when it comes to ensuring the safety of those who travel by foot.

In fact, Florida ranks as the second worst state when it comes to the frequency of pedestrian fatalities on the roads. As the analysis broke down the fatality rate per capita, this ranking accounts for the fact that Florida is also one of the more populous states in the United States.

Crunching the numbers, Florida reported 3.16 pedestrian deaths for every 100,000 residents of this state. The only state that reported was numbers had a figure of 3.5 pedestrian deaths for every 100,000 residents.

These numbers are obviously not acceptable, and hopefully authorities and others with the power to do so will make changes that will reduce the number of pedestrian deaths. The problem is likely not the result of one particular behavior, as a number of bad driving habits, like distracted or inattentive driving, drugged driving and even speeding in an area where pedestrians congregate are all contributing factors.

As improvements are hopefully made, it is important for the victims of pedestrian accidents, as well as grieving families, to remember that they have legal options available to them after a negligent driver causes a pedestrian injury or death. One such option is to file a wrongful death claim after a fatal car crash.
