New vehicle safety features are not always totally effective

One of the latest trends in car manufacturing is to add high-tech systems which help drivers by braking automatically when an object is in the car's path. Moreover, other established features that have been around for decades, like cruise control, have seen recent improvements.

These features are valuable aids that can help keep a driver safe and can even serve to conserve energy and reduce emissions. However, it is important to remember that they are not magical formulas for preventing all automobile accidents.

In fact, a recent study, the results of which were reported by the major media, showed that, for many vehicle models, the automatic braking system did not stop a car from hitting a stationary object in front of it. The cars were tested at just over 30 miles an hour and did not have their cruise control features activated.

Also, many models of vehicles that were tested, all but one, failed to stop completely for a car in front of them even with the automatic braking feature activated.

The ultimate conclusion was that operators of these types of cars should not rely on their vehicle's safety features as if their vehicles could drive themselves. Drivers must remain attentive to the road and be prepared to manually stop their vehicles in the event of a hazard because, at least at this point, their safety systems are only meant to help prevent accidents; they are not full proof.

Victims of accidents involving these sorts of vehicles may themselves have a number of options. They still can allege that the driver of the other car was inattentive and thus negligent. Under the right circumstances, they may even have a valid products liability claim.
