Florida House Speaker suggests change to medical malpractice

Unfortunately, throughout the United States, including Florida, there are instances where doctors, surgeons or medical professionals do not live up to the highest standards expected of them at a medical facility and may fail to properly care for a patient. Unlike many occupations where if you make a mistake it can be corrected quickly and without major ramifications, in the medical field an error while caring for a patient could literally mean the difference between life and death.

At a recent CBS show, "Facing South Florida with Jim DeFede", Florida House Speaker was discussing medical malpractice laws in the state. He stressed that victims of medical malpractice, such as negligence or gross negligence, that leads to trauma should be properly addressed to assure a victim's rights.

He went on to state that the state's two year statute of limitations with regards to medical malpractice is a problem. The reply was initially prompted by a question to Corcoran regarding legislation on whether women can sue a doctor following an abortion.

Patients are protected against the negligence of medical professionals with laws that allow victims to sue due to worsened conditions from medical malpractice. And for victims who have died from medical malpractice, a wrongful death suit may be filed against negligent parties. Compensation to the family of a victim may help cover not only medical expenses but potentially pain and suffering as well as future lost wages due to the negligence of others and the loss of a loved one.
