Hummus products at issue in recent product recall

Hummus, a dip made from mashed chickpeas, has become a popular and healthy snack item in Tampa. However, Tampa residents may be concerned to hear that tubs of hummus produced by the Sabra Dipping Company have been recalled due to the possibility that the hummus has been contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes. The recall was voluntarily done by the company.

According to Sabra Dipping Co., Listeria bacterium were located in its facility. The bacterium were uncovered during a Food and Drug Administration inspection. However, the bacterium were not found in the hummus tested.

Listeria monocytogenes bacteria can make a person very ill. It can cause severe infections. The elderly, children, pregnant women and those with compromised immune systems may be especially affected by Listeria monocytogenes bacteria. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, symptoms of a Listeria infection include a stiff feeling in your neck, being confused, experiencing convulsions and having trouble maintaining your balance. If a person is infected with Listeria, the infection may end up being invasive, affecting more than just the gastrointestinal tract. In fact, according to the CDC, Listeria sickens around 1,600 people annually and results in 260 fatalities.

This recall is only one in a recent string of product recalls regarding listeria. Such recalls include certain types of food products, including frozen waffles, ice cream, milk and frozen vegetables. In the end, what is important is that all proper safety measures are taken at the time a food product is manufactured. In addition, it is important for facilities that make food products to inspect those products and issue recalls when appropriate. If a consumer does fall ill due to a contaminated food product, they may want to explore whether it is possible to pursue compensation for the losses suffered due to the illness via a products liability lawsuit.
