Drunk driver kills motorcyclist in head-on crash in Dunedin

Drunk driving is a plague on America's roadways, one that doesn't appear to have any clear-cut solution. Every year, thousands of people are injured or killed when they are involved in a fatal car crash caused by a drunk driver. Unfortunately, it appears that a recent collision in nearby Dunedin is yet another example of this horrible public safety issue.

According to a recent report, a 40-year-old man driving a sport utility vehicle was driving the wrong way when he slammed head-on into a 38-year-old man riding a motorcycle. The collision occurred in the evening hours. The motorcyclist was transported for medical care after the accident, but he died of his injuries.

The driver of the SUV, a Clearwater resident, was arrested due to exhibiting signs of intoxication throughout the course of the accident investigation. He was subsequently charged with DUI manslaughter. The initial reports did not indicate whether or not the man participated in any field sobriety tests, and there was no indication of his blood alcohol content level at the time of the crash. The drunk driver also suffered injuries in the head-on collision, but they were classified as minor.

The family of the deceased motorcyclist will likely be watching the outcome of this driver's criminal case closely. A conviction for driving under the influence could play a crucial role if the motorcyclist's family members choose to pursue a wrongful death claim. But for now, they are left to mourn the loss of the 38-year-old victim of what appears to be another alcohol-related car accident in Florida.
