Traffic fatalities rise in Florida

Traffic deaths increased across the country in 2016, including the state of Florida. While the number from 2015 to 2016 wasn't a huge increase, it follows a growing and disturbing trend since 2014. Over the past three years, Florida has a 21 percent increase in traffic fatalities.

In 2014, the state totaled 2,501 fatalities related to car accidents. The report, from the National Safety Council, includes both deaths that happen at the scene of the accident plus related deaths that happen within the year. In 2016, the total number of in-state deaths rose to 3,037 -- over 500 more than just 3 years ago.

Eliminating unsafe driving habits

There are many potential causes of a car accident, but studies repeatedly show that human error is the most common. As more Floridians are traveling, drivers need to practice safe habits.

Here are a few behaviors that drivers should never engage in:

  • Distracted driving
  • Drunk driving
  • Drowsy or overtired driving
  • Reckless driving
  • Drugged driving
  • Speeding
  • Running red lights
  • Driving too fast for conditions

The consequences of an accident

There are real consequences when a driver's negligence causes an accident. As the fatality figures show, death is a too common result. If you've lost a family member due to another person's driving, you may want to consider a wrongful death lawsuit.

What is wrongful death?

Wrongful death cannot erase the pain of losing someone you care about, but it can help cover the cost of losing them. Wrongful death applies when another driver was clearly at fault. Compensation covers damages, which may include funeral and memorial expenses and medical bills, and also loss of income and emotional pain and suffering.

If you need help after an accident, an attorney consultation can provide answers about your options as you recover from the incident.
