New collision-avoidance system intended to prevent truck accidents

When a semi-truck crashes with an ordinary vehicle, the consequences are not pretty, especially for anyone in the regular vehicle. The good news is that automotive technology is constantly moving forward in order to reduce the various tragedies that occur on the road.

For years, passenger vehicles have been incorporating a variety of automated technology, from cruise control to parking assistance systems. Now, the goal is to reduce the risk of truck crashes through the use of technology. A new collision mitigation system is one way the industry is working to prevent disaster by taking over a truck's steering when a crash becomes imminent.

New Technology To The Rescue

The new system, Evasive Maneuver Assist (EMA), was developed with the help of ZF and WABCO to enable rigs to automatically maneuver out of the way of an accident if they cannot maneuver out of the way in time. According to Overdrive Online, EMA works along with WABCO's OnGuard active braking system as well as ZF's electrohydraulic ReAX steering system.

EMA is able to use sensory data to analyze other stopped vehicles, both in front of the truck and to the side, and it will automatically take action to either avoid a crash or minimize damage.

Don't Give Up Control

While the new system is promising, some collisions are still unavoidable. This is true regardless of how alert drivers are and what automated features are installed in either the semi or the car. It is important that no driver rely exclusively on automated features. Staying alert is still the best way to stay out of a dangerous situation.

If It's Too Late To Avoid A Crash, You Can Still Seek Compensation

Those who are injured in these devastating crashes face an uphill battle of medical bills, lost wages and pain and suffering. If you or a loved one has been involved in such an accident, a personal injury attorney can help give you the best chance of receiving the compensation you need.
