GM recall tally for 2014 reaches 76

It's getting hard to keep track of all the recalls being issued by General Motors. Most notably, the embattled automotive company is currently facing a class action lawsuit related to numerous injuries and deaths linked to defective ignition switches that were used in approximately 2.5 million small cars. To date, the auto maker has issued 76 motor vehicle recalls during 2014 alone to encompass some 30 million vehicles.

Recently, GM announced the recall of approximately 613,600 midsize pickups due to an airbag defect. The recalled vehicles contain airbag units that "were wired incorrectly during the manufacturing process." As a result, the airbags may not deploy correctly or when needed. Another recent GM recall includes more than 89,000 Chevrolet Spark minicars due to a defect that could potentially cause the vehicles' front hoods to "stick in the open position" and unexpectedly open.

While GM has not received any reports of injuries or deaths stemming from these most-recent recalls, one can only imagine the devastating injuries that could follow if an airbag didn't deploy in time or a car's hood flew open while traveling 70 MPH down a freeway.

The GM recalls and claims of negligence against the company have shined the spotlight on the automotive industry as a whole and raised questions and concerns about the safety of the cars and trucks we drive.

As consumers, we expect that the products we purchase have been thoroughly inspected and passed safety and performance tests. From a child's toy to a new car, companies must ensure that the products they manufacture, market and sell are free of defects and hazards.

Tampa area residents, who have suffered injuries attributable to a believed auto defect, would be wise to discuss their case with an attorney. Injuries resulting from defective airbags, tires, steering components and seat belts can be serious in nature and result in an individual incurring costly medical expenses and suffering permanent disabilities.
